O2 have this week launched their 4G network trial in London and have recruited around 1000 volunteers to test the service over the next 9 months. Previous 4G trials by BT and Everything Everywhere have proven successful and VoIP providers across the UK are excited about the possibilities the eventual wider rollout will bring.
How will this benefit VoIP Providers?
A 4G network will be faster and more reliable allowing VoIP providers to offer better quality calls and more advanced features to mobile workers. What’s more, these features can be provided seamlessly, without having to rely on GSM (normal mobile calls), which are both expensive and limited in their capabilities.
What advantages will this bring to customers?
As well as offering download speeds of up to 100Mbps, 4G has been designed with Quality of Service (QoS) in mind. This all adds up to a great VoIP experience for the end user.
Businesses using mobile VoIP will effectively be able to use their mobile phone as a true extension to their office phone system, allowing workers to make and receive business calls on the move using their office number, without forwarding charges.
Small businesses are constantly looking for ways to reduce costs and increase flexibility. The move to 4G will enable workers to work as effectively out of the office as they can sat at their desk, without the need for multiple handsets.
What will I need to use 4G VoIP in the UK?
Once the 4G network becomes publicly available, you will require a 4G compatible handset with a VoIP app installed and an Internet Phone Service from a UK VoIP provider.
There is a big “but” however – we are assuming for the moment that mobile operators will allow it! Clearly mobile VoIP poses a threat to their call revenue. On the other hand we hope they realise that data is the future, and look to sell more comprehensive data packages instead…
Fingers crossed 🙂
